Unified Communications – a world of protocol interoperability (or not!) – part 1

A quick overview of unified comms shows that the VoIP world seems to be dominated by the sip protocol while the video conferencing finds its strength in the h.323 protocol.

Both are packet-switched protocols, allowing realtime media to be sent over the data network.

To obtain an understanding of the 2 different protocols, one may refer to www.packetizer.com.

However, there are a number of initiatives out in the industry that show great promises in the interoperability of video and voip. This has occured through the cooperation of Tandberg and Microsoft, where significant work has occurred to make Tandberg video equipment (h.323) interoperate with Microsoft’s OCS (sip) platform. One may refer to the following presentation from the Melbourne User Group on UC, at disussuc.com.

There has also been some relatively old work done some years ago in the sip/h323 integration, in the form of a research paper.
